One week ago today, Sydney Jiu Jitsu Academy (SJJA) achieved an incredible milestone in the school’s short history by becoming the best team in NSW.
After just nine months since the school’s launch, SJJA took home the 2017 NSW State Championship, winning first place for Kids, Adults and Masters. It was an exceptional performance for such a young club, but SJJA founder and world champion Bruno Alves wasn’t surprised, ‘This year we won medals in all first-class tournaments around the world, like the Pan-American Championship, the Abu-Dhabi World Championship, and the Kids World Championship. We have been working hard all year and I believe it is just the beginning for us.’
With competitors in nearly every bracket and a swarm of SJJA supporters around the mats, SJJA was an undeniable force on the day. The cheers of SJJA supporters echoed throughout the complex as our brave competitors, young and old, from white belts to black, from our clubs in Crows nest, Dee-Why, Ku-ring-gai, Gladesville and Maroubra, battled the State’s finest Jiu Jitsu practitioners. As a competitor myself, I was extremely proud to look out at the wall of black and white coaching and cheering for my success. And while I didn’t come home with a victory on the day, it was the support of our SJJA team that made me feel like a winner anyhow. I believe it is this team spirit at SJJA that really sets our club apart, and provides the perfect environment for us to grow and improve.
‘SJJA is a big family, and everyone contributes to our success’ Bruno explained. ‘I want to thank our whole team, the kids, adults, parents, for making this moment possible. Words cannot express how proud I am. I am sure every one of us is proud of our team too.’
The next challenge on the horizon for SJJA is the Australian Jiu Jitsu Championship, August 12th & 13th, in Melbourne. Good luck to all our competitors. Oss!
